How Can A Children’s Dictionary Help Your Child?

Ah, it’s that time of the year again. You know the one when they begin flooding the TV airwaves with “Back to School” ads. Yes indeed, all the kids love it! Okay, that’s a stretch to say the least. However, I’m sure some children out there somewhere get stoked and excited about returning to school for a brand new year of reading, writing, and arithmetic. Are you one of them? Anyway, back to school at my house basically translates as 2nd grade. This is why I need to get my seven year old daughter caught up with 2nd grade spelling words. Why would I get her into these you may ask? Because it’s great to get a head start on these things before school actually begins. You can get your child sent to the head of the class if you take the initiative to teach them a little at home.

Got any decent 2nd grade spelling words written down to quiz your child? This is an exercise my husband and I like to do with our daughter. We did it last year before she entered the first grade, and we are doing it this year before she enters the second.

The only difference is that now we’re using 2nd grade spelling words. Things are a tad more difficult and complex. This is completely fine because she has already learned so much in the first grade. How can we drill her with legitimate, up-to-date 2nd grade spelling words you might ask? That’s an easy one, especially if you have a home computer.
Look for “2nd grade spelling words.” online and you’ll get lists up lists of resources and useful websites giving you 2nd grade words.

Make a list or print it out. Then you can proceed in drilling your child with 2nd grade spelling words. Teach them how to pronounce them correctly, but also their meanings and spellings. In no time at all your child will be set and anxious for the new school year.  He/she will be ahead of schedule.

Are you still quizzing your child with terms they already know? Don’t waste your time.  If they’re heading into 2nd grade this year, then you need 2nd grade spelling words.

Work with them regularly and help them get a good head start. Bright minds certainly lead to bright futures.

Surviving September: Tips to Help your Child and Family Get “back to School”

Browse the range of back to school supplies here

It is that special time of year again. A time of new beginnings as we close another summer chapter and start a brand new school year. Summer can be a magical time for children. It is a time for many to relax schedules, play, soak in some sunshine, grow, and most importantly… rest. The fall is an exciting time filled with anticipation for a healthy and productive school year. It can also present many challenges for families as they attempt to adjust to a more demanding schedule and meet the needs of everyone in the household.

Here are some ideas:

Talk to your child. This helps them to process their feelings about what they have experienced and what they are looking forward to in their world.
-Remember all of the fun activities from summer. Often times, talking about recent experiences helps them to look forward to and transition into new ones (encourages an understanding of time and change).
-What is your favorite thing about school? Why?
-Who are your friends? What do you like to do at recess?
-What do you think of your class this year? Classroom? Teacher?
-Do a timeline of his/her day. What did you do before lunch? After lunch? After school?

Prepare physically for the demands of school.
-Set a good daily routine. Help your child develop an awareness of schedules and why they are important. This helps children transition to new tasks and provides structure and security in their world.
-Set a bedtime routine and stick to it. Kids thrive when they are well rested. They are better able to attend and focus in class, stay healthier, and are generally happier during the day. (9-12 hours of sleep a night is optimal for growing children).
-Provide healthy snacks and meals and try to have a set mealtime for the family.
-Include appropriate grooming (bathing, oral hygiene, washing hands) habits in your routine as well.

Back to SCHOOL. An applied learning activity helps children to recall what they already know and build upon it. It also fosters a sense of achievement and confidence when learning new things. Help your child see him/her self as a learner.
-Try to read every day with your child. Take turns reading a favorite book. Ask him/her questions about what is being read. Look at pictures and talk about what is happening in the picture (try to guess what will happen next).
-Talk about the weather (science and nature). What will the weather be like today? In a month? In two months? What will be happening outside? Fall is a very exciting time to explore and learn about the changing seasons.
-When you are in your neighborhood, talk about signs you see, identify familiar things such as objects, street signs, and neighbors. When walking or driving home, let your child direct you.. “Which way do we turn next?”
-While at the grocery store, read the signs on the rows, read labels, read everything! Talk about grouping and why products are where they are and not somewhere else in the store. This helps children to build an awareness of order and ultimately supports problem solving in different situations.
-Go on everyday math and science adventures! Talk about numbers and use different objects around the house to count, add, multiply and divide. Ask questions like: How many more will make 10? If I eat 5 how many will be left? When cutting a pie, talk about fractions and percentages. When cooking, read and follow recipe directions, talk about measurement, and the science of cooking and baking. What makes things freeze? What is a solid? What is a liquid?
-Build a calendar with your child! Kids LOVE visual stimuli and it will also help you to keep track of special events and activities. Pull out the school year calendar and write in all of the half days, holidays, and special events. You can even include what lunch is served at school each day. Use your imagination and have fun with the activity! It helps with counting, days of the week, and months of the year. They will take pride in marking off days of the week and have a way to look forward to special occasions. It also helps them to process what has happened in their world and prepare for what is next.

Meet the needs of your entire family. Your children are not the only ones who are experiencing a life change. A new school year can bring about added stress with changes in schedules and demands that your whole family must adjust to.
-Plan an activity for the entire family to look forward to on an evening or weekend. The fun does not have to be over just because summer has come to an end.
-Make sure you know the schedules of other family members. Everyone seems to have lots things to do. Add these activities to your calendar.
-Set a time (and place) for your family to be together each day (ex. mealtime) so you can connect with each other about things that are important.
-Everyone get your rest and do your best to make healthy choices.

Many warm wishes for a healthy and productive September and school year!

Back to School Checklist

Many American children are starting back to school soon, and no matter how young or old they may be: There is always a long list of items that must be purchased in preparation. This list is an overview of the basic stuff most kids need – whether they’re starting kindergarten or college.

1. Schoolbags & Backpacks: Attending school usually involves keeping track of books, papers, pens and more. So carrying bags are a must. Younger children prefer backpacks, and many cute ones are available just about anywhere these days. Browse School Backpacks here.

If your children are a bit older – particularly in junior high or high school – be sure to get rugged, durable backpacks that will last. These older kids carry very heavy loads sometimes, and it helps to spend a little extra money for backpacks right at the beginning of the year. I’ve found that hiking backpacks work best for high school students, because they have large carrying capacities and they’re quite strong and durable. Buying these types of backpacks will ensure they last through the entire school season, instead of having to be replaced halfway through the year.

College bound students might prefer laptop and gadget bags, sling bags, duffle or Jansport bags instead.

2. Paper Supplies: This includes notebook paper, spiral notebooks, pocket folders and binders among other things. Most kids need all of these from the time they start first or second grade, though the needs get heavier as the children get older. Younger children might need art paper and older children might need graph paper, so the needs vary slightly but the basics tend to stay the same.

High School honor students and college bound students will also need special books, and these usually need to be purchased. Book covers are also useful for all grades.

3. Writing Tools: Pens and pencils are generally thought of automatically, but often there are other writing related materials that must be purchased for school as well. Younger children often need crayons and paint for instance, while older kids may need markers and colored pencils. Browse the basic back to school supplies range here

As children move into junior high, high school and college, they’ll require a larger variety of the basics too. Instead of just blue pens for instance, they often need blue, black and red. It’s good to know the teachers at this point by the way: Some do not allow gel pens to be used for instance, while others may forbid red pens or yellow markers.

4. Misc. Tools: These change from one grade to another, but generally additional tools of some kind are needed for just about any age range. Examples of school tools needed includes rulers, protractors, and calculators. Browse Calculators Here

5. Clothing: This is usually a given, but a checklist always helps. Be sure to buy pants, shirts, socks, and underclothing. Don’t forget to get new shoes… some kids need more than one pair because specialized shoes are needed for gym or athletic programs. Also be sure to buy athletic or gym cloths if they’re required. These could include shorts, t-shirts, or sweat suits.

Sweaters and lightweight jackets are usually needed for the cool early mornings, and heavier coats will be needed within a few months of school starting.

Most schools have dress codes these days too, so it’s a good idea to get a copy of that for reference before you go clothes shopping. You wouldn’t want your daughter to have a whole new wardrobe of tank tops only to find out they’re not allowed to be worn at school for instance.

Back to School Home Organization Tips

Just to make sure your back to school supplies have all been ordered click here to browse the range of
Back to School Supplies

As your kids go back to school, crazy schedules challenge your ability to keep up and mountains of school paperwork begin to take over your home. There are some simple home organization tips and strategies to help you keep track of it all and keep your home in order.

1. Make a master schedule. It is a lot easier to keep track of everyone if there is just one place in your home where everyone’s schedule lives. My personal preference on this one is having a whiteboard calendar where I can easily put in appointments and erase them as necessary. If everyone in your family has a different color on the calendar that can help keep straight who is where. This is one of my favorite home organization tips because it helps immediately streamline scheduling for the whole family.

2. Create some organizational routines into everyone’s day. Taking time every day to get organized is a great habit to instill into your kids. Take some time to help them organize their schoolwork projects. Help them figure out how they need to plan out their day and their week so they can get everything done that they need to do. Who knows, with this home organization tip, maybe you will even pick up some things that will help keep you organized every day.

3. Make sure that schoolwork that comes into your home has a place to go. Because if it does not, chances are that it will end up in all sorts of odd and unusual places in your home. If you want to keep clutter at bay, this is one of those vital home organization tips. You need to make sure that your kids know where their schoolwork belongs and what the consequences are if it is found elsewhere in your home. Making sure that schoolwork has a place in your home will save you headaches and wasted time looking for schoolwork at the last minute in the morning.

4. Have a “needs action” board or place in your home. If your kids need permission slips signed, a doctor’s note, a picture for a class project, money for lunch, etc, having a board or place where all of these kinds of things live is a great time saver. Make it a house rule that everyone checks the board daily. That way you can make sure that you kids get what they need from you and you do not have to try to track them down to get them what they need. Home organization tips like these can not only be great time savers but also help eliminate last minute headaches for you and your kids.

A Guide to Face Painting for Beginners

Face painting is an activity that is always a hit at parties at fairs and at carnivals. You will always notice a line whenever there is a face painting booth in the area. Kids love having their face painted because they can either look like their favorite super hero or animal or they can look cute and sophisticated depending on the design they choose. There are lots of face painting kits available and they have lots of designs that appeal especially to children.

The cool pictures on their faces would make kids stand out and attention-grabbing. This is one activity that has been a hit the past couple of years and more and more people want to learn how to do it. For beginners like you, here are some of the helpful tips you can use.

Tip number one: study the art. You can choose from various sources. To get started try reading books about face painting so you’ll know the basic things you need to know. You can also check on some step-by-step instructional videos online. Internet could also provide you with various articles and guides on face painting. Study and learn from the things you want to use. The videos available usually demonstrate how it is done by doing a step-by-step face painting sample for the viewer.

Tip number two: invest in the necessary supplies for face painting. Once you’re done studying about the techniques, you can now go and buy the supplies needed for the face painting. Buy a lot of paint in various colors. It is best to buy brushes of different sizes too. Getting a face paint marker is also highly recommendable. This will let you outline he design on the face of the kid before coloring it in. Before you use the paint this will help you create the design first. Once you have all the supplies needed for face painting and you’re already equipped with the right lessons on the said field, then you can now start face painting. Practice and practice the craft so you can perfect it.

You can ask your friends to act as your models and use their face as your canvas. Since children’s skin are sensitive, you can start first with adult or older people. You can ask their honest opinion of your work after you paint their faces. Take the criticism and the praise as a challenge to do even better. When you think you’re confident enough with your skill, you can now volunteer to do face painting job in parties or even put up your own business.

Easy Face Painting Ideas for Kids

Face painting is one of the best activities introduced in recent years. This activity can now be seen at almost all children’s parties and carnivals or festivals. This is an activity that boys, girls and even their parents can enjoy and participate in. Even kids could do face painting by themselves since it is very basic to do and they could either try painting each other’s faces or just choose the designs they want. Basic face painting for kids involves showing them the ropes, explaining the techniques and guiding them. If the kids will be the one to do the face painting this is applicable. If you are the one doing the face painting for kids then you will need the basic face painting supplies.

Initially, you have to look for various face painting designs. There are many designs you can find online. Choose a design for girls and for boys. Organize your designs in a clear book with the designs for boys and girls separate from each other. There are also face painting books you can find in various crafts and bookstores in your area. These designs will serve as pattern for the artist. Be sure the designs can be done so do not choose very complicated ones.

Afterwards, pick the paints you will be using. Various brands of face paints are available in the market and it is very important that you choose the right colors. Available paints are metallic, plain colors and those with glitters. You have an option to pick one type or combine all of them. Bring your designs when going paint shopping so you’ll know what colors you’ll need the most. Make sure to check the label of the face paint you’re buying to make sure that it’s water-based. Face painting marker could also be purchases in the store. Use the marker to make an outline on the face. If you’re not comfortable with brushes or sponges, this would help make the process easier.

Finally, make sure to purchase brushes and sponges. Keep in mind to get different brush sizes to ensure you can do the designs. Sponges can be used to color in large portions of the face. Invest in good quality brushes if you are keen on doing face painting more than once.

If the kids think they could do the designs by themselves, they could actually do the face painting by themselves. Have the kids play around with each other’s faces. They can also paint on the faces of their parents so everyone can enjoy face painting. If they ask you to step in, do so and show them how it is done. Just by simply watching the kids paint, you might be able to discover the future artists.
